Labor secretary urges minimum wage hike : The Hill

The acting secretary of labor wants Congress to raise the federal minimum wage.

Higher wages will cycle back into the economy, acting Secretary Seth Harris said on Tuesday, and pay levels that keep pace with inflation will take the politics out of the debate.

“When working families have more money in their pockets, they pump it right back into the local economies,” he said. “The business owners I’ve met supported the higher minimum wage because they know it means more people have more to spend on goods and services, and that of course helps their businesses grow.”

Joe Biden Mocks Minimum-Wage Doomsday Talk : Huffington Post

WASHINGTON — In a speech Tuesday commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Fair Labor Standards Act, Vice President Joe Biden mocked conservatives who’ve warned of dire economic consequences if Democrats manage to pass an increase to the minimum wage.

Flanked by a group of minimum-wage earners, Biden told a crowd at the White House that such doomsday talk is as old as the FLSA statute itself, which was enacted during the Great Depression in 1938 to establish minimum wage and overtime protections.

There are 3.6 million Americans working for pay at or below the federal minimum wage. And thirty million low-wage workers are making less today, adjusted for inflation, than they did 45 years ago in 1968. Had the federal minimum wage simply kept pace with inflation since 1968, it would be $10.70 per hour today instead of the current $7.25.

The Reality Of Who Actually Works For Minimum Wage Will Shock You : Upworthy

By Brandon Weber
If you add up the totals in these charts, 75% of minimum wage earners are adults. Let that sink in for a minute. 70% have at least a high school degree, and some have had at least a year or two of college.

Take a look at the size of the big blue slice in the first pie chart — that represents adult women who are working for minimum wage, almost half of the total. This is why raising the minimum wage would make a huge difference for tons of families, especially those in which women are the primary breadwinners or single moms.
